Quick Thoughts: Monster Hunter Stories 2

Monster Hunter Stories 2 is a fun game, but it suffers a bit from a plodding plotline that moves at a glacial pace. A majority of the story revolves entirely on traveling from town to town to see who can help you with Ratha and the Wings of Ruin. By the time the story picks up and shifts gears into something a bit more interesting, it's almost over.

The combat, however, is excellent. It's very much a rock, paper, scissors system, but punched up a bit. Not only do you have to choose the correct attack to beat theirs, but you also have to use the correct weapon to deal the most damage. On top of that there are elemental weaknesses to consider as well. Add in a team of six monsters to assist you in battle (one at a time of course) and you wind up with a pretty deep combat system. That doesn't even include the occasional NPC teaming up with you to potentially get two more fighters. Granted, you don't have any control over them, but the help is welcomed.

I'm a little conflicted with Monster Hunter Stories 2; on the one hand, the plot isn't really anything special, but on the other, the combat is excellent and there's a wealth of monsters to collect and fight with. I do like it and it's a fun game, but don't expect a very deep or engaging plot
