Today, Niantic announced that it has sold its gaming division to Scopely, the developer of Marvel Strike Force and Monopoly Go! among others, for $3.5 billion. That means Scopely will now be in charge of Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, Monster Hunter Now, Campfire, Wayfarer, and the teams behind them. Meanwhile, Niantic will be spinning off a new company called Niantic Spatial Inc which will focus on geospatial AI. From the sounds of it, they'll be using the mapping data they've built from their games and pairing it with AI to "enable AI to meaningfully understand and interact with the physical world." That's a lot of words to say they want to jump all in on the AI gravy train that tech is currently enamored with. Niantic will continue to own and operate Ingress Prime and Peridot.
